People are among the most rewarding—and often the most intimidating—subjects to paint. In this engaging two-day workshop, award-winning pastel artist Glen Maxion will share an intuitive, design-based approach to drawing and painting the figure that emphasizes expression over perfection and observation over formula.

Rather than concentrating solely on anatomy or meticulous detail, you'll learn to capture the energy, movement, and emotion of people through strong gesture, simplified shapes, expressive mark-making, and thoughtful use of color. Traditional concepts such as proportion, measurement, and anatomy will be discussed, but always in the service of creating paintings that feel fresh, believable, and alive.

Through illustrated presentations, live demonstrations, guided exercises, and individualized easel instruction, participants will explore topics including gesture, composition and design, working from photographic reference, the relationship between shape, form, value, planes, and edges, and techniques for creating luminous shadows and vibrant light.

Whether your goal is to paint beach figures, family scenes, or people in everyday life, you'll leave with practical tools and a deeper understanding of how to simplify what you see into expressive, compelling paintings.

Artists of all experience levels are welcome.
