Plein air painting has opened up a whole new world and a “life giving” experience for me.
Painting outside on location from nature offers the essence of my own inner voice and an opportunity to share with others how I view the beauty around us. There is a deep inner connection with a life force (in my world, God) that is much bigger than myself and there is an inner desire to capture that sense of light, joy and peacefulness as I express the experience on canvas. It is my hope to convey that feeling as I journey on this magical path of being an artist. I am eternally grateful for family, friends and teachers who have supported and believed in me throughout this artistic process. It is more importantly about the enjoyment of the process and the curiousity of learning that fills our soul. As Richard Schmid has so eloquently stated, “May each painting you do from that sacred place include an expression of gratitude for the extraordinary privilege of being an artist.” I will be using an Plein air oil painting from our cabin to create a pastel painting. March Artist of the Month Brian Freeman was trained in architectural Illustration and began his career as a mural painter. He supplemented his living by working in the construction trades.
“ I always had some artwork or creative project going when I wasn’t doing it full time. The urge to create is always there, following you around, like an itch that needs to be scratched.” Brian felt he had not had enough experience in honing his drawing skills, so in 1996 he began attending open studio drawing sessions at the Drawing Studio and U of A in Tucson. “ It was there that I found a new love for the pastel medium. It’s drawing and painting in one shot and works well for short attention span people.” Brian has been a member of the Tucson Pastel Society for several years while trying to balance family life and fixing broken things.
