About 20,000 years ago in the caves at Lascaux, France, the first artists made pastels by shaping earthen pigment into sticks.   Over time, art masters like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo used pastels limited still to earthen shades of white, black, yellow and red.   Technology eventually allowed pastels to evolve into the thousands of intense, vibrant colors of today.  Famous artists using pastels were Rosalba Carriera, Eugene Delacroix, Degas, Monet, Cassatt and Picasso.  The Tucson artists in this show continue this rich tradition.

TPS and especially the members who participated in the Boyce Thompson Juried Exhibit would like to offer our special thanks to Maurice Sevigny, a distinguished working artist (https://www.artbymaurice.com) and former Dean and Chief Administrative Officer of the College of Fine Art, University of Arizona. We appreciate that he not only juried the submissions to our show and selected the awards, but he joined us at our last meeting to share with us what characteristics of each award-winning painting caught his eye and made the painting worthy of recognition. His willingness to critique our work in a positive and encouraging way will contribute to even finer paintings from our members in future. Thank you, Maurice.  --- Adrianna Hewings. Show contact.
